Catalogue Note

It is thought that Markham painted herself in the picture as the woman in the black hat and Theodore Dreiser, her lover, as the man serving punch.  The artist was known for her lavish New Year's Eve parties, which were attended by many of New York's literary and artistic glitterati of the time.
