Catalogue Note

For related examples and a discussion of Tammy Garcia's pottery see Cohen, 1993, pp. 131-133: "Tammy Garcia comes from the Naranjo family of Santa Clara Pueblo, a long and distinguished line of ceramic artists...Tammy...yearned to transform the entire pottery surface, not just small portions of it, into a canvas for her designs....Tammy cites her interest in Oriental ceramics, which were often richly and densely decorated over entire vessel surfaces...The challenge has been for Tammy to 'translate the Oriental aesthetic into a Pueblo sensitivity that is also personal.' ...in keeping with an art form that spans two millennium, Tammy follows the traditional method of gathering clay, building vessels, and firing them."
