Catalogue Note
The present work is a bronze reduction of one of the figures in Hermon MacNeil's monument entitled The Coming of the White Man, which he designed for Washington Park in Portland, Oregon. The group consists of two figures, a Chief and a Medicine Man, both members of the Multnomah tribe of Oregon. According to Thayer Tolles, "MacNeil told The Metropolitan Museum in 1939 that at least a dozen examples were cast in bronze; foundry records from the Roman Bronze Works indicate that more than twenty were produced beginning in 1903" (Thayer Tolles, American Sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2001, p. 481).
