Catalogue Note

This figure ranks as one of the largest Jalisco monumental figures, known in the Ameca, El Arenal and San Sebastian regions. Without holding any implements of prestige or wearing ceremonial attire, she exudes a commanding presence from the portraiture of her face, and the simplicity of her posture. She portrays a figure in the prime of life, representing a female both in her role as the mythic life-giving progenitor, and a protective figure of clan lineage; see Townsend ed. (1998:157, fig.8) for a standing male figure.
