Description

  • 6 1/2 x 144 inches
linen embroidered with silk thread.
height 6 1/2 in.; length 143 in.
16.5 cm; 363.2 cm

Embellished with a lengthy Hebrew inscription, indicating that this binder is the creation of Bella Rosa in honor of her husband Yom Tov Roccas in Elul [5]389 (= 1629). Composed of two layers of fabric with a finely woven linen front decorated with floral motifs.

Torah binders from Italy were created by women of the Jewish community who donated them to the synagogue.  They were embellished with delicate floral motifs and elaborate stitching; a few are embroidered with dedicatory inscriptions indicating they were produced in honor of their husbands or in memory of a deceased relative.  So highly valued was the creation of these beautiful objects for the synagogue, that in the 16th century, the rabbis of Italy introduced a prayer to be recited every Sabbath morning, praising “all the daughters of Israel who fashion covers in honor of the Torah.”
