Description

  • signed on base I. Shor in English and Hebrew, with bird and date 1956.

oval, applied with panels of figures as follows: the front: Moses, Aaron, David and Joseph; the back: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; the sides: a Jew holding Torah and a Jew holding lulav and etrog; the pilaster supports with a boy and girl with the Simchat symbols and a boy and girl with Succot symbols; with inscription on the capitals "Joy and Happiness at Simcha Torah," the detachable cover engraved with a band of Zodiac signs and inset with a pierced panel of two birds in foliate strapwork, all surmounted by a vertical tableau of a family Succot scene flanked by flowering plants topped by birds.

The seven figures depicted are the "ushpizin," the guests who visit the Succot on the Succot holiday.  The inscriptions translated include: on the top: "In Succot you shall dwell 7 days;" on the sides: "We beseech thee O Lord, make us now to prosper" and "save, we beseech thee O Lord."
