arched backplate cast in relief with a scene of cleansing the Temple, within beaded border, lacks servant light.

Catalogue Note

The scene depicts the Maccabees cleansing the Temple.  The central figure is the Kohen Gadol, the high priest.  The Hebrew inscription reads: "For the commandment is a lamp and the Torah is a light" (Proverbs 6:23).  The subject was used by the Bezalel workshops, see Sotheby's New York, December 12, 1988, lot 380.
