This prominent fur hat known as a streimel is worn by Hasidic men on the Sabbath, holidays and for festive occasions such as weddings.  The origin of this hat is unknown but according to legend, the custom of wearing a streimel came about as a result of a decree attempting to humiliate the Jews by forcing them to wear the tails of unkosher animals.  The Jews, however, turned what was meant to be a mark of shame into a majestic hat that symbolizes their devotion to religious tradition.  This hat, known as a Streimel mit a shpits (with a point) is worn by members of the Ruzhin Hasidic dynasty who explain its form as an allusion to a royal crown.
