Description

ink and gouache on parchment.
height 36 in.; width 25 in.
91 cm; 63.5 cm
Recording the marriage of Solomon David Yoav, son of Joseph Hazak and Angelica, daughter of Shabbtai Raphael me-Camerini, on Sunday 14 Tishrei, 5601 [= 11 October 1840].
This fancifully decorated ketubbah adapts elements from the Neo-Grec style which was in vogue at the time of its creation. This decorative scheme took as its starting point the earlier expressions of the Neoclassical style and further emphasized the motifs of classical heads and figures, masks, winged griffins, sea-serpents, urns, anthemions, arabesques and Greek fret patterns. The medallion below the text prominently features a dramatic landscape with a theatrical ruin -- an uncommon design element for a ketubbah. The marriage was celebrated on the eve of the holiday of Sukkot.
