A rare example of a kippah created in silk and metal ground, embroidered with silk and metal wrapped threads. Embellished with decorative appliques, beads, and sequins. Lined with leather.

This sumptuous kippah, fashioned of gold and silver thread was produced using a technique known as spanier arbeit. This decorative method is probably the only textile technique used exclusively for the manufacture of objects for Jewish use.  Although the origin of this craft is still unknown, by the mid-19th century, the main center for the production of spanier arbeit work was Sasow, a town in eastern Galicia.
