Catalogue Note

The bases are inscribed with a list of names of the members of the Hevra Kadisha Society and "These atzei hayyim (torah finials) made by the Holy Benevolent Society, carriers of the caskets of those who rest in peace, under the leadership of Reb Isaiah of Erchingen in the year 1803."

The village of Erchingen is now the town of Frauenfeld in the Swiss canton of Thurgau.  The Rabbi noted in the inscription was from Erchingen, but it is not clear in which city the society was based.
