Description

  • 64 x 37 1/2 inches
woven silk fabric brocade with colored and metallic threads with a later red cotton panel with red cotton ties; lined with linen, the number 8 stitched and stamped on the back.

This type of luxury woven textile gained popularity in the early 18th century and was mainly for court clothing and ecclesiastical use. The designs in present lot include floral motifs and exotic palms and pagodas with latticed fences, typical of these textiles which were influence by exotic wares imported from Asia.

Condition

Scattered stains throughout. Neatly repaired tear of approx. 14 in. near bottom border.
