Description
- Philip and Kelvin LaVerne
- Extension Dining Table
- etched Philip and Kelvin LaVerne
- acid-etched and enameled patinated brass over pewter and wood
including two extension leaves (not shown)
Condition
Overall very good original condition. The dining table retains the original highly saturated coloration of the enameled surfaces. The top with small and minor scattered surface scratches and light abrasions. With some minor rubbing and scattered oxidation to the patinated brass surfaces throughout. The proper left front portion of the supporting base column with a few areas of circular oxidation, the largest of which measuring approximately ¾ inch. When viewed in person the table presents with rich coloration to the enameled patinated brass surfaces of the top, which depict a complex narrative composition of figures within a landscape. The rectangular leaves of the table do not continue this pattern instead displaying a circular pattern with Chinese characters to each corner, adding further depth to the decoration. The four corners of the table leaves present with separation of the patinated brass veneer, which does not detract from the structural stability of the table. The table presents with delicate details of the figures and the landscape executed in exquisite, multicolored enamelwork. A rare dining table to appear on the auction market and in very gently used condition.
The extension leaves can be stored underneath the table top, which is not the configuration that was shown in the catalogue illustration. There is a decorative edge on the leaves that when stored beneath the top becomes the outer edge of the table and obscures the structural hinges that are visible in the catalogue illustration. Separately, each of the two leaves measures 20 inches (50.8 cm) in the length.
