Description

  • A Rare "Proteo" Lamp
  • enameled metal

Provenance

Casati Gallery, Chicago
Acquired from the above by the present owner, 2005

Condition

Overall very good original condition. This is an extremely rare model; only two are presently known to have been produced and the present example is the only version in red. The vibrant red of the sheet metal standard presents with a few very minor losses to the enamel and surface scratches localized around the edges of the curved form, brass knobs and the side screws, due to sensitive handling and consistent with age. The white cascading sheet metal elements also have localized areas of small losses to the enamel, the largest measuring ΒΌ inch long, which are visible in the catalogue illustration. With some surface dirt localized to the recessed contours of the brass hardware. With minor losses to the white paint of the interior of the shade. The lamp is fitted with a single bulb to the interior. The underside of base with a few minor nicks and surface scratches, which are consistent with light use and contact with surfaces. A dynamic, exceedingly rare example of this model that presents with a vibrant red tone in person. A wonderfully vigorous and rhythmic lamp design by Gio Ponti.

Catalogue Note

This rare offering is one of only two known examples of Gio Ponti’s “Proteo” lamp; the other is executed with an orange base rather than the present red.  The elegant arcs of the tiered white sheet metal shade elements provide a soft gradual dispersal of light and gracefully echo the curved arm of the vivid red base.  Made in the 1960s, the lamp is an example of Ponti’s architectonic forms and an important model produced by Sagim.
