Condition

Overall in very good condition. The bronze surfaces display an exceptionally rich moss green and brown layered patina that heightens the sculptural nature of this elegant table design. The patinated bronze surfaces with a few minor light surface scratches, light rubbing to the patina, and with traces of surface soiling to the recessed contours of the design consistent with age and gentle use. The glass top is original to the table and has some occasional light surface scratches consistent with gentle use. The glass top with one small and minor shallow edge loss along the side contour of one corner measuring approximately ½ inch in diameter, and with a few additional small and minute flecks to the perimeter edges adjacent to the corners (only discernible under very close inspection). The interior top contours of each leg post which support the glass top are presently fitted with four felt pads. The table presents beautifully in person, the model distinguished by its highly sculptural form. The patinated bronze surfaces present with a highly tactile surface quality which accentuates the table’s sculptural lines, and the patinated bronze surfaces display an exceptionally rich and vibrant layered patina.

Catalogue Note

The well-known art collector Tigrane Matossian acquired the present lot from Diego Giacometti in 1977 in Rolle, Switzerland.  At the time, Mr. Matossian was living with Antoinette de Watteville, the former wife of the recognized modern painter Balthus.  This lot is offered together with a copy of the original bill of sale and a personal letter addressed to Antoinette de Watteville from the artist discussing the sale of the table.
