Condition

This lot represents a prototype of an unrealized production example. The piece remains in original condition with some wear commensurate with exposure to the elements. With a crack to the proper right runner extending the depth of the runner and adjacent minor losses. With four 1 inch long areas of white paint to the seatback likely marked by the artist. With one small segment that has come unwelded, and with a loss measuring 1 ΒΌ inch to the proper right of the chair's seat. With glue remnants scattered throughout the surface. This piece is an unusual and rare example of a prototype design, thus demonstrating an interesting look into the design process and technique of the artist.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Catalogue Note

When asked in 1952 about his view of furniture, Harry Bertoia stated “chairs are studies in space, form and metal, too.”  The iconic “Diamond” chair produced by Knoll was the realization of Bertoia’s goal to introduce a sculptural form as a useful—and comfortable—piece of furniture.  The present lot was an experiment to further develop the same design into a rocker, which was never produced and remained in the designer’s personal collection.  This lot is being sold with a certificate of authenticity from Val Bertoia.
