Condition

Overall in good original condition. This piece is executed in treated plywood and therefore the edges of the design with some edge losses, discoloration and edge roughness as a result of the material, handling and use. The side of the frame shown in the catalogue to the left is unfinished and was possibly abutted by another work, as the designer was not likely to leave this edge unfinished. With scattered surface scratches, abrasions and edge losses consistent with use. The fabric upholstered elements are original and show evidence of minor soiling, slight fading and surface discoloration. This sofa was likely designed for use against the wall, as the back of the sofa elements is not supported by a frame. The sofa remains at 90 degree angle as a result of the internal spring. The spring with evidence of age and would benefit from being replaced. Designed for his companion, this work shows a wonderful window into Frey’s design aesthetic which priorities and praises function. For the purposes of de-installation and shipment, the elements of the design are modular and cane be moved separately, with the exception of the footboard, which is one piece of wood that extends the length of the sofa. This footboard is attached by nails which are present, and some of which have been bent back for safety following de-installation from the exhibition.

Catalogue Note

Albert Frey came to the United States in 1930, and during his first ten years took extensive trips crossing the country. During one such trip in 1932, he visited Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler, who alongside other European modernist architects, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier remained significant influences on his aesthetic. Frey viewed furniture as an extension of his architecture and thus each work is informed by a simple balance of shape, function and an awareness of nature and its surroundings.  The two lots included in this auction were designed for the home of Elise de Wolf, Frey’s longtime companion.
