Description

  • Pair of Prototype Chairs
  • corrugated cardboard and masonite
from the "Easy Edges" series

Provenance

Collection of the artist
Private Collection, California (acquired from the above, circa 1975)

Literature

Peter Arnell and Ted Bickford, Frank Gehry:  Buildings and Projects, New York, 1985, pp. 65-67 (for renderings and photos of the production model)
Yukio Futagawa, Architect:  Frank Gehry, Tokyo, 1993, p.195 (for the production model)

Condition

Overall very good original condition. The edges of these prototype chairs are executed in a white painted masonite, as seen in the catalogue illustration. One chair with three minor breaks to the masonite to one side, which are underneath the painted surface, and therefore possibly original to the production. The painted masonite with some edge nicks and dings consistent with age. The surface of the cardboard shows very minor evidence of the use, with some very light discoloration and the rubbing to the cardboard edges. The cardboard used in these prototypes is significantly lighter in the coloration than the production examples of the series. A wonderful rare exploration by Gehry in cardboard that remained in his collection for a number of years.
