Catalogue Note

As a close friend of Chu Teh-Chun, Wu Guanzhong once made a remark on Chu's works: "Looking from afar, your paintings seem Western, but with a closer look, they are Chinese. A Chinese painting possesses delicacy of gauze or silk, and the images are like unpolished jade hidden in stone – you try to pry it open, yet you can't extract it." In this composition, the painter applied stark lines and strong colour contrasts, accompanied by multiple layers of broad and uninhibited brushstrokes vertically across, together they form a vertical axis that supports the whole picture; then the artist uses various fine round-edge brushes to add bright colours like azure, yellow and sky-blue.  They spring upwards and intervene with each other, creating a sparkling vivacity that catches ones' eyes and giving the viewer's true visual delights.
