Catalogue Note
The present lot is based upon the magnificent model by Georges-Alphonse Jacob-Desmalter (d. 1870) which he made for the bedroom for Caroline Murat and was later used by Napoléon in the Palais de l'Elysée in Paris in 1808. Georges-Alphonse was a student of the famous designer Percier. As a designer himself, he created des meubles harmonieux et fournit, comme son pere et son grand-pere. He was highly regarded in royal circles for his very distinctive Empire style furniture and supplied many pieces for French castles. His shop was situated in rue de Bondy and later in rue des Vinaigriers. The maker of this good quality copy has followed strongly Jacob-Desmalter's model which shows the continuous interest in the Empire style in the 19th century.
