  • 96.5 cm; 212 cm; 73.5 cm
surmounted by a thick molded Rance de Belgique marble top and fitted with three frieze drawers above three long drawers and flanked by cupboard doors opening to one shelf

Condition

Overall in good condition with the usual minor scratches, dents and nicks to veneers and carcass consistent with age and use. Tarnishing to gilt-bronze in places. Some of the fluted brass inlays are lifting or slightly detached. The marble with the usual minor chips to edges, scratches to surface consistent with age and use.

Catalogue Note

The present celebrated model commode centered with attribute of Peace (doves) and Love (bow and quiver) was first conceived for the Bedchamber of Louis XVI at Compiègne. Probably executed by Guillaume Stoeckel in 1786,  It was subsequently enlarged and reveneered by Benneman; the bronzes casting and gilding were produced by Feuchère, the bronze chasing executed by Duval. 

The original is now in the Louvre (OA 5507)
