the stepped pediment with carved bowtied berried-laurel branches above a painted classical amphora before a green velvet platform top for clock display, the frieze fitted with a drawer, the central cabinet door opening to two shelves and the side doors opening to one shelf, front and sides finely decorated with Classical flower filled urns and Egyptomania motifs.

Overall in good condition with the usual minor scratches, dents and nicks to veneers and carcass consistent with age and use. Tarnishing to gilt-bronze in places. Losses to gilt highlights.

The exact same frieze designed with an angular strapwork enclosing a leaf motif and buds can be also found on a console table made in 1869-71 for William H. Vanderbilt's New York residence, as well as on a side cabinet made for Mrs. Cosby in 1871 (see Herter Brothers: Furniture and Interiors of the Gilded Age, p. 151 and 154.)
