Catalogue Note

The painting on these vases is most likely by John Simpson (active second-half of 19th century), who is referred by Joan Jones in Minton, The First Two Hundred Years of Design and Production, p. 106, as having exhibited vases "painted with flies and flowers" at the Vienna Exhibiton of 1873.
