Catalogue Note

Although of Belgian origin, van Beurden seems to have established his reputation as a master ivory carver in England and Ireland rather than in his native country. He exhibited thirteen years in a row at the Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Art from 1887 to 1904 with a total of sixteen sculptures in ivory or marble. The present is a tour de force of carving to achieve a wonderful composition of cupid. Dated 1894, it is highly probable that the present was one of the works he exhibited at the Royal Academy.
