Catalogue Note

Following thorough research, the present model is now considered rare based on two facts: the first would be the signature, since it is common to see Carrier-Belleuse sculpture signed either A. CARRIER -BELLEUSE or A. CARRIER. Here on the present model, it is interestingly signed CARRIER Sculp. (the French reduction of the word Sculpteur). The second rarity is the fact that this model is cast by the renowned foundry of Victor Paillard. Those two indications may lead us to believe that the original model was most probably made for an exhibition. June Hargrove, theauthority on the sculptor, has found mention of a model known as LA SOURCE exhibited at the Union Centrale, Paris, Exposition des Beaux-Arts Appliqués à l’Industrie, 1865, no. 16. La Source, statuette Bronzes appartenant a M. Paillard Duquel ils ont été exécutés. Although no images have been found, we believe that this model could be the one, first exhibited in 1865.
