Catalogue Note

The present work was likely completed circa 1889/90.  The inscription above the drawing  is from the medieval German heroic poem  the “Niebelungenlied” or "The Song of the Nibelungs," (Der Niebelungen Not, 39th Adventure, verse 2378), and depicts two of its main characters. Von Stuck returned to the subject in paintings of the 1920s but with a different compositional style.
