Condition

This painting is unlined and the surface is clean and bright. There is a small stray mark in the upper right, possibly surface dirt or from the artist's studio. Under UV, restoration fluoresces in spots above the head, in areas on the neck and shoulder, to address a fine scrape on the left side, and in small spots in the lower right and upper right.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

The present work is one of ten oil studies, watercolors, and drawings sent to Dr. Currelly in 1926 by Margaret Mackail, Burne-Jones' daughter.  The head of a woman may have been a study for one of the attendant maidens in The Wedding of Pysche (1895, Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts, Brussels)
