Catalogue Note

The present bronze bust of Salome is taken from the three-quarter length polychrome marble figure dating to 1893 in the Leipzig Museum. Klinger was one of the most important artists of colored sculpture and Die Neue Salome along with Kassandra are among the most famous examples, along with the earlier Beethoven Memorial, 1886, Klinger's submission to the Vienna Succession of 1902. Gladenbeck of Berlin was authorized by Klinger to cast bronze reductions of Salome as early as 1903.

The original marble model of Die Neue Salome was conceived and carved by Max Klinger in 1893 (Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts, Inv. No. 25).
