Description

  • Vellum
a leaf, 461mm. by 330mm., with a large initial 'R' (opening "Requiem eternam ..." the introit for the Office of the Dead), in white scrolls shaded with light brown, on crackled gold ground, 125mm. by 130mm., enclosing a funery scene with two bearded men lowering a shrouded body into a grave before a church as clerics look on, one holding an aspergilla, with full border of realistic pansies, carnations, strawberries and red figs with other flowers and fruit, all on a speckled dull-gold ground, 8 lines of text with music on a 4-line red stave, same on reverse with elaborate 2-line initial in brown ink touched in red, slightly trimmed, somewhat cockled and with some scuffs and small damage to text and lower border, else good and presentable condition, framed

Provenance

From the collection of Robert Forrer (1866-1947): cf. the other leaf from this large and richly decorated Gradual in his Unedierte Miniaturen Federzeichnungen und Initialen des Mittelalters, 1907, no.40, described there as "wohl französische Arbeit".
