Oblong 4to (257 x 340mm.), 47 photographs, comprising: 13 albumen prints (215 x 278mm., or the reverse), of which 11 hand-coloured, including two 2-part panoramas, and 34 silver prints (100 x 145mm., or the reverse), mounted on card, recto and verso, many captioned in German in pencil on the mount, contemporary black half morocco gilt, spine and corners expertly repaired, upper hinge strengthened

Catalogue Note
Uncommon views of the Treaty Port of Wuchow, situated on the left bank of the Si-kiang (West river), north-west of Canton/Hong Kong, and which opened to foreign trade in 1897. The albumen prints include two 2-part panoramas of Wuchow (one c.1880s and one late-1890s, hand-tinted), a river view with the mail Steamer Waihoi (built in Hong Kong in 1902), images of various European buildings in Wuchow, including the British Club, the newly built British consulate, and the custom's house (Jardine Matheson). The silver prints include a photograph of the British Consul with a mandarin, Chinese staff of the customs house, the British gunboat HMS Sandpiper (built 1897), and other views and groups.
