Catalogue Note

A presentation copy of one of the greatest works of travel ever published. From the library of the editor and his son at Hampton Court Palace.

In Burton's absence, the work of editing the manuscript was undertaken by Thomas Wolley, who wrote the preface to the first volume ("T.L.W., Hampton Court Palace, June, 1855"). Little is known about Burton and Wolley's friendship, though Burton records in volume 3 (p.389) that he travelled back from Jeddah to Suez on the steamship Dwarka, on board which he "experienced the greatest kindness from the commander and chief officer (Messrs. Wolley and Taylor)." The officer Wolley was perhaps a relative of the editor. Volume 1 is inscribed with the editor's son's name, Arthur Lamplugh Wolley and dated 1858, and volume 3 is inscribed with the editor's name, Rev. Thomas Lamplugh Wolley (1806-1857), both of The Palace, Hampton Court.
