Oblong 4to (215 x 295mm.), 85 gelatin silver prints (from 115 x 170mm. to 170 x 230mm., or the reverse), including a few copy prints, mounted on 31 card leaves, recto and verso, pencil captions in Polish on the mount, contemporary morocco, flat spine, gilt edges, brass clasp and catch, minor surface wear to some images, one card mount chipped at fore-edge, binding slightly rubbed

Catalogue Note
The Al-Said family of Oman ruled Zanzibar from 1840 to 1964 and this album includes 2 portraits of H.H. Sultan Sayyid Hamad bin Thuwaini (1857-1896), the fifth Sultan of Zanzibar, and grandson of Said ibn Sultan (c.1791-1856), who moved his capital from Muscat in Oman to Zanzibar in 1840; a group portrait of Sultan Hamad's four wives; a large portrait of the notorious slave trader and local governor Tippu Tip (1837-1905), who met and helped several famous explorers of the African continent, including Henry Morton Stanley and Dr David Livingstone; traditional buildings and colonial architecture; views of towns; coastlines; flora and fauna; local people in traditional costume; German colonial officers and missionaries; and big game hunting scenes. Thirty two photographs at the beginning of the album bear the round blindstamp of the photographer Carl Vincenti, who had a studio in Dar-es-Salaam.
