Catalogue Note
Nousveaux (1811-1867) was a French artist who spent two to three years in Senegal from late 1842 and on his return exhibited some watercolours at the Salon de Paris. His drawings were used as the basis for illustrations in a number of publications, including the periodical Le Tour du Monde and H. Frey's Côte occidentale d'Afrique: vues, scènes, croquis (Paris, 1890). The later captions on the backs of the frames are as follows: 1. Rivière de la Côte d'Or, signed and dated lower right "Nousveaux, 1842"; 7. Fort Hollandais de Chama, Côte d'Or, 1843.
