Catalogue Note

Barents, one of the best-known Dutch chartmakers and pilots, was appointed to lead three expeditions in search of a north-east passage round Russia; on the third, his crew was shipwrecked on Novaya Zemlya and Barents lost his life attempting to make the return passage in an open boat in spring 1597.

This fine and very important map is a summary of his discoveries, edited by the great Petrus Plancius, and finely engraved by Baptista van Deutecum, but also includes some of the English discoveries in Arctic Canada.

This rare map should not be confused with the later, slightly reduced copy which appeared in de Bry's voyages from 1601 onwards.
