Catalogue Note

An attractive set, with first editions of the supplementary fourth and fifth volumes. The first three volumes, by Campbell, originally appeared between 1715 and 1725. The tentative date of 1751 for the present reprint is based on the announcement in the General Advertiser for 14-17 January: "This Day is Published, In Three Volumes, Folio, Vitruvius Britannicus". Stocks of this reprint were apparently still large enough to satisfy the increased demand occasioned by the appearance (through different publishers) of Woolf and Gandon's supplementary volumes between 1765 (the first part of volume IV appeared on 27 March) and 1771.
