Catalogue Note

The world shown on the only known gnomonic or sundial projection. This fascinating map, first published in 1610 as part of Franz Ritter's Speculum Solis ("Mirror of the Sun"), a treatise on sundials, is an ingenious cartographic conceit. Rodney Shirley describes "this most unusual map" as being "projected from the North Pole as if it were the table of a sundial, with the landmasses drawn to scale in proportion to their distance from this point. The map is thus highly distorted according to normal conceptions but it is nevertheless mathematically correct".
