Catalogue Note

Rare Swedish map of the world on the Mercator projection drawn by Gustaf Billberg (1772-1844) and engraved by Per Aspegren (1788-1854). According to the title, the map is based on a four-sheet wall-map published by Carington Bowles in 1785, but is also very similar to the single-sheet version published in 1790.

Only two other examples have been traced thus far, one in the Swedish Royal Library  (dated 1808) and the other in the Military Archives of Sweden. Australasia is labelled "Polynesien" and Australia itself termed "Ulimaroa, Nya Holland" and the tracks of the explorers Cook, Moore and Smith and Phipps are shown.
