Catalogue Note
De Wit was one of the most prominent and successful map engravers and publishers in Amsterdam in the period following the decline of the houses of Blaeu and Janssonius, and he acquired many of their plates as they were dispersed. This relatively early de Wit atlas also contains maps printed from the plate-stock of other Amsterdam map publishers, such as Mercator, Hondius, and Visscher.
Many of de Wit's own maps in this volume are in early issues, including the world map (Shirley 451, state 1). The Visscher map of New England is also early (Burden 315, state 2).
