Catalogue Note
The watercolour view is the original for one of the 20 lithographs published as Sketches in the Environs of Sydney; being Part of a Series of Sketches Intended to Illustrate the Scenery of New South Wales (Sydney, 1850) and the 10 lithographs in this lot also come from this work. Martens, before arriving in Australia, had been engaged as an artist on board The Beagle and become a close friend of Darwin who described him as "an excellent landscape painter." (see also: R. Butler. Printed images in colonial Australia 1801-1901 (National Gallery of Australia, 2007, pp. 137-141).
