- An album of watercolours of China, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Cape of Good Hope, Bay of Naples and North Africa. [c.1842-c.1851]

Oblong folio (335 x 460mm.), 34 watercolours on paper (20 individually mounted, each approximately 260 x 360mm.; 14 mounted in pairs, each approximately 180 x 255mm., or the reverse), by J. Stoddart, F.W. Turton, W. Markham, and Beresford, mounted on 24 sheets, recto only, and one 4-part folding panorama of Naples on paper backed on linen mounted on the lower pastedown, 2 nineteenth-century lists (one in pencil, one in ink) of the watercolours loosely inserted, nineteenth-century green morocco, spine with raised bands gilt, gilt ruled border to sides, gilt edges, a little scattered spotting, binding rather rubbed

Catalogue Note
A fine collection of topographical watercolours, from the library of Admiral Sir William Parker, comprising 26 views by Captain James Stoddart R.N. in China (7), Greece (5), Cyprus (3), Egypt (3), North Africa (3), Gibraltar, Albania, Sicily, Ascension Island, Mauritius and the Cape of Good Hope; one view of Navarino by F.W. Turton, 6 views in Turkey and Greece by W. Markham and a view of Corfu by Mr Beresford. At the end of the album is a 4-part folding panorama showing the fortifications of Naples from the Bay dated 15th October 1848. Stoddart was an accomplished amateur artist and many of his drawings of Hong Kong and China were engraved for publication in Thomas Allom's China Illustrated (London, 1845)
