Catalogue Note

Diego Luis de Sanvitores' mission to evangelise the islands of the Chamorro archipelago (which he renamed the "Islas Marianas" in honour of the Queen Regent of Spain, Maria Ana of Austria, who financed the mission) started in 1688 and ended with his death in 1672 at the hands of the Chamorro chief Mata'pang. As well as recounting Sanvitores' missionary activity, the first in this area, Garcia's account gives detailed descriptions of the islands' geography and indigenous culture.
