Catalogue Note
This album, owned by an unknown young English lady named Ellen, was mostly compiled in India in the first quarter of the nineteenth century and includes flirtatious verse and illustrations to her from male admirers, most notably from the artist-scientist-Indologist James Prinsep (1799-1840) dated from June 1825 (Benares) to August 1826, comprising over 20 original pen and ink, or watercolour illustrations by Prinsep (most signed, some dated), 4 by George Ridge (1804-1831) dated 1829-30, and single examples by T.R. Dalrymple, G.R. Daley, R.G. Roberts, and G.P. Thomas, others signed with initials and 32 unsigned. The illustrations are mostly of scenes in India, together with others of European scenes.
