in the form of extracts from letters to an unnamed recipient, recounting his arrival in Rio de Janeiro four days after the overthrow of Emperor Pedro I and providing a vivid and witty picture of the country and its tumultuous politics, including his entertainment of the former Emperor, several trips taken to Bahia to ensure the protection of British interests, descriptions of places and people, diplomatic and social engagements (such as taking coffee with English merchants as soldiers mutinied on the streets outside), 86 pages, plus blanks, 4to, the entries dated 25 February 1831 to 26 August 1832, but the manuscript not produced before 1833 (written on paper with 1833 watermark), marbled boards, scuffed
