Grey was a priest who from 1848 served as secretary to Edward Feild, Bishop of Newfoundland. The sketches which he made on the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador in the summer of 1857 he hoped "may also serve to show what is the character of the scenery of a country very little known, and very often underrated".
