Catalogue Note

Cronau was sent to America as correspondent for the German newspaper Die Gartenlaube. His work centred mainly on the West and life therein, but also included views of the East and South East including one of the Brooklyn Bridge, and a Louisiana swamp scene. In addition to landscapes, Cronau also drew portraits, most notably of Sitting Bull, and scenes such as the interior of a San Francisco Chinese Restaurant, a view of a carriage travelling through a tunnelled redwood tree, cowboys and gold-mining scenes.
