Catalogue Note

Rare wall map of Cuba, compiled and revised by Spanish military surveyors between 1824 and 1831, the engraving finally completed by Estruch in 1835. This map is the result of one of the most ambitious map publishing projects ever attempted, with special paper and presses needed to produce the map.

When the map was commissioned Cuba was Spain's only major possession in the Americas, and this remarkable survey - the finest printed map of Cuba from the colonial era - was evidently created to help ensure that the island could be retained by Spain.
