Catalogue Note

Rare. Robertson's photographic studies of Turkish costume and street characters and trades are the first such photographs taken in Constantinople and are "certainly among the earliest photographs of street workers in the world. They pre-date Atget's celebrated series of Parisian vendors by 45 years." (K. Jacobson, Odalisques & Arabesques, p.264).
