Catalogue Note

The column of Theodosius which stood in Constantinople was erected in honour of emperor Theodosius I (347-395), the last Roman emperor to rule over both the eastern and western halves of the empire. He is recognized by the Eastern Orthodox Church as Saint Theodosius. It was carved with reliefs depicting his victory over the barbarians and stood until the end of the fifteenth century.

This work appears to be rare: there was no copy in the Atabey collection, it has not appeared at auction (on ABPC) in over 30 years and there is only one record of the work on COPAC.
