Catalogue Note

This is the second of two folio double-hemisphere world maps prepared by Danckerts, the elaborate vignettes depicting the four classical elements (fire, air, water and earth) inspired by de Wit's maritime world map of 1668. Unfortunately, Danckerts was overshadowed by rival firms including de Wit and Nicolaas Visscher, Clearly the Ottens brothers felt the Danckerts name lacked cachet, so substituted de Wit's name, to promote sales.
