Catalogue Note

The Italian 'première' of Salome, commemorated with this unusual ornament, was in fact not a première, but a dress-rehearsal. The events that led to it brought Toscanini and Strauss into direct confrontation and cooled their relationship considerably. Following Toscanini's failed bid to secure the Italian première of the work in Milan (Strauss himself was to give it first at the Regio in Turin), La Scala scheduled a public dress-rehearsal for 21st December 1906, the night before the official Turin opening, inviting journalists, subscribers, benefactors and friends. Strauss was furious, and Toscanini never conducted another of his operas again.
